FromSoftware’s critically acclaimed action-RPG Elden Ring has officially sold over 30 million copies worldwide, the developer announced Monday via social media platform X. Originally released in February 2022, the title has maintained a strong presence in global gaming charts, with over 5 million units sold in the last 10 months alone. It now stands as the highest-selling title in the Japanese studio’s history, far eclipsing previous hits like Dark Souls 3 and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
Sales Milestone Cements Elden Ring’s LegacyThe developer expressed its gratitude to fans with a post that read: “Dearest Tarnished, we are profoundly thankful for your lasting devotion. May your path be forever guided by the Grace of Gold.”
This 30 million milestone also means Elden Ring has officially outsold the entire Dark Souls trilogy, which has collectively moved around 27 million units across its three entries. The sales figure includes digital and physical copies across all supported platforms.
The announcement arrives as anticipation builds for Elden Ring: Nightreign, a newly revealed spinoff title set for release on May 30, 2025.
Impact of Shadow of the Erdtree ExpansionA significant contributor to the game’s continued momentum is the launch of its first and only major expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, in June 2024. The expansion introduced a new storyline, expansive map, challenging bosses, and new enemy types. It received critical acclaim, becoming Metacritic’s highest-rated expansion of all time.
Despite narrowly missing out on Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2024, where it lost to Astro Bot, Shadow of the Erdtree made a massive commercial impact, selling five million copies in just three days post-launch.
Future of the Elden Ring FranchiseWhile Elden Ring has become the crown jewel of FromSoftware’s catalog, no direct sequel is currently in development. Studio president and game director Hidetaka Miyazaki clarified in late 2024 that while Elden Ring 2 was not planned, the IP could return in other forms.
“I would like to tell you that we are not ruling out the development of the IP ‘Elden Ring’ in some form in the future,” Miyazaki stated at the PlayStation Partner Awards 2024 Japan Asia.
Shortly after, FromSoftware unveiled Elden Ring: Nightreign — a multiplayer co-op action survival spinoff set in the Lands Between. The game is slated for May 30, 2025, and will launch across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
