Nobel Peace Prize 2024: Check winners list, how selection process works and eligibility criteria across categories?

The 2024 Nobel Peace Prize kicked off this week and will be concluding on October 14, 2024. The winners for this year’s Nobel Prize in Physiology or medicines are Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkum , renowned for their discovery of microRNA. The awardees will receive prize money of 11 million Swedish crowns ($1.1 million), which can be shared among the winners.

This year, the Nobel Peace Prize has a total of 286 nominations—197 individuals and 89 organisations. The first Nobel Prize was awarded in 1901, and since then, the Nobel Prizes and the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences have been awarded 621 times to over 1000 individuals and organisations. The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economics Sciences was introduced later in 1969.

The Nobel Peace Prize originated with Swedish inventor and philanthropist Alfred Nobel , who specified in his will the institutions who would award the prize. Nobel is best-known for his invention on dynamite, entrusted the selection of the Nobel Peace Prize to a committee of five members, elected by the Norwegian Parliament.





Nobel Peace Prize winners selection process

The deadline for this year’s nomination was January 31. The process begins with nominations, submitted by a wide range of eligible individuals, who have to meet the eligibility criteria, which differs across categories. Once nominations are submitted, the Nobel committee carefully reviews and assesses hundreds of submissions to create a shortlist of candidates.



Eligibility criteria for the Nobel Peace Prize category

They should be:

  • A member of national assemblies and governments of sovereign states as well as current heads of state.
  • A member of the International Court of Justice and Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague.
  • A member of the Geneva-based Institut de Droit International.
  • A member of the International Board of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom
  • Director of peace research institute and foreign policy institutes.
  • A member of the main board of directors or its equivalent of organisations that have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
  • Current and former members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee and former advisers to the Norwegian Nobel Committee
  • University faculty members in the fields of history, social sciences, law, philosophy, theology, and religion alongside university rectors and university directors.


Eligibility criteria for the Nobel in Physics and Chemistry category

The should be:

  • A member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
  • A member of the Nobel committees for these prizes.
  • Former Nobel laureates in these fields.
  • Tenured professors in physics and chemistry at the universities and institute of technology of Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and Norway and the Stockholm-based Karolinska Institutet.
  • Correspondents in at least six universities or university colleges selected by the Academy of Sciences across the world.
  • Other eminent scientists from whom the academy may see fit to invite proposals.



Eligibility criteria for the Nobel in Medicine and Physiology category

They should be:

  • A member of the Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine
  • Members in medicine and biology at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
  • Former Nobel winner in medicine or chemistry
  • Professors at the faculties of medicine in Sweden and holders of similar posts at the faculties of medicine or similar institutions in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and Norway.
  • Holders of similar posts at no fewer than six other faculties of medicine at universities around the world who are selected by the Nobel Assembly.
  • Other eminent scientists whom the Nobel Assembly may otherwise see fit to approach.



Eligibility criteria for the Nobel in Literature category

They should be:

  • A member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and of other academics, institutions, and societies that are similar to it in construction and purpose.
  • Professors of literature and of linguistics at universities and university colleges.
  • Previous Nobel laureates in literature.
  • Presidents of societies of authors that are representative of the literary production in their respective countries.


Eligibility criteria for the Nobel in Economics category

They should be:

  • A member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
  • Members of the Nobel economics prize committee.
  • Former Nobel laureates in economics.
  • Permanent professors in relevant subjects at universities and colleges in Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and Norway.
  • Holders of corresponding chairs in at least six universities or colleges across the world who are selected by the Academy of Sciences.
  • Other eminent economists from whom the academy may see fit to invite proposals.


Afterward, the Nobel Institute's permanent advisers evaluate the shortlisted nominees, discussing the most suitable candidate. The committee strives for unanimity when making its final decision; however, if consensus cannot be reached, a simple majority vote is used to determine the winner.
