New York election results 2024: Kamala Harris wins with 28 electoral votes, continuing state's Democratic streak

Send Push
Vice President Kamala Harris secured victory in New York's presidential election on Tuesday, gaining the state's 28 electoral votes. Since supporting Ronald Reagan in his decisive 1984 win, New York has consistently backed Democratic candidates in every presidential race.

Despite being his home state, former President Donald Trump has failed to garner significant support in New York throughout his three presidential campaigns.

New York holds the fourth-largest electoral vote count, following California, Texas and Florida. However, due to demographic changes, it now has one less electoral vote compared to the previous election. At 9.00 pm EST, The Associated Press announced Harris as the winner.

In another key development, New York voters approved an amendment to the state’s constitution, adding protections against discrimination based on factors such as "gender identity" and "pregnancy outcomes." Known as Proposition 1, the Equal Rights Amendment seeks to safeguard transgender rights and abortion access, though it sparked sharp debate. While supporters argue it strengthens legal protections for reproductive healthcare and gender rights, opponents raised concerns about potential unintended consequences, such as granting transgender athletes the right to compete on girls’ sports teams. Despite confusion over the amendment's wording, which does not explicitly mention abortion, legal experts agree that it could provide a framework to block future restrictions on reproductive rights in the state.

New York has consistently voted for the Democratic candidate in every presidential election since backing Ronald Reagan in his 1984 landslide victory. Donald Trump's electoral performance in his native New York has been notably weak, with the former president failing to secure victory in the state during all three of his presidential campaigns.
