Kimbal Musk , entrepreneur and brother of billionaire Elon Musk, on Wednesday criticized the recent surge in tariffs, warning they would lead to higher inflation. His comments came in response to US vice president JD Vance ’s post accusing Democrats of promoting dependence on China.
“Republicans for higher prices. How about that,” Kimbal posted on X. “This Trump tariff-tax has driven prices for everyday goods through the roof.”
The tweet was in response to Vance calling Democrats 'limousine socialists' who 'screech desperately for dependence on Chinese supply chains and inflated equities.'
Kimbal pushed back, highlighting the real-world economic toll of the trade war. Referencing to JD Vance's book, Kimbal further added, "I read your book. It’s good. I’d think you’d have more sympathy for your community’s cost of living. Inflation sucks for everyone, but it especially hits our under-served communities the most.”
The backlash came amid a sharp market downturn following the implementation of sweeping US tariffs on Chinese imports overnight. In a particularly aggressive move against China, Trump added a 34% tariff on top of the 20% already in place from earlier this year. Following Beijing's retaliatory measures, he announced an additional 50%, bringing the total tariff on Chinese imports to 104%—one of the highest ever implemented by a US administration.
