American artist Chris Brown was arrested on Thursday at a luxury hotel in Salford in connection with an alleged nightclub attack, reports the Guardian
Brown was taken into custody in London for the alleged incident that took place two years ago.
Brown was detained by police at around 2am at the five-star Lowry hotel in Greater Manchester. He had just arrived in the UK ahead of a planned concert tour.
Brown is currently being held in custody on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. The arrest is part of an investigation led by the Metropolitan Police.
The alleged incident took place in February 2023 at Tape nightclub in London’s Mayfair. Brown is accused of launching an unprovoked assault on music producer Abe Diaw, reportedly striking him with a bottle multiple times before punching and kicking him as he lay on the ground.
Diaw previously told The Sun that he was left needing crutches to walk after the alleged assault and had filed a civil claim seeking $16 million in damages.
In a statement, a Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “A 36-year-old man was arrested at a hotel in Manchester shortly after 0200hrs on Thursday, 15 May on suspicion of grievous bodily harm."
“He has been taken into custody where he remains. The arrest relates to an incident at a venue in Hanover Square on 19 February 2023.”
Brown is scheduled to perform 10 shows in the UK as part of his Breezy Bowl XX tour, which is set to begin at the Co-op Live arena in Manchester on 15 June. It's currently unclear how his arrest will affect those tour dates.
Chris Brown was also arrested in 2009 for physically assaulting his then-girlfriend Rihanna.
Legal battles
Chris Brown’s rise to fame as an R&B sensation has turned into a long list of legal problems that have haunted his career for over a decade.
Brown was involved in a nightclub brawl with Drake in 2012, a fight with singer Frank Ocean in 2013, and multiple other incidents ranging from alleged assaults to probation violations and weapons charges, reports the US Magazine.
Some of the most serious claims include sexual assault accusations, restraining orders filed by ex-girlfriend Karrueche Tran, and lawsuits from former employees.
In 2016, Brown was arrested after a woman alleged he had threatened her with a gun. No charges were filed after a lengthy standoff with police. Another lawsuit from 2018 alleged a woman had been sexually assaulted at his home; Brown denied the allegations, and the case was settled out of court.
In 2021, he was named in a lawsuit after his dog allegedly attacked a housekeeper’s sister, and he was identified in a police report about an alleged assault at his home.
