NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police Economic Offences Wing (EOW) on Friday arrested Deepak Gupta, brother-in-law of BharatPe co-founder Ashneer Grover , in connection with the alleged misappropriation of funds at the fintech company, according to police.

Gupta is currently being questioned, and his arrest marks the second in this case, an officer said.

He was included in the FIR that was filed against Grover, his wife Madhuri Jain, and their family member in May 2023, in connection with the Rs 81-crore fraud case. Grover had earlier denied the charges, saying he is “in the right”.

In August of this year, the EOW had apprehended Amit Kumar Bansal, who was allegedly one of the individuals associated with the non-existent firms that had received payments amounting to Rs 72 crore from the then directors of BharatPe between 2019 and 2021. An inquiry identified 33 such non-existing vendors, and it was discovered that the accused and his brother were connected to these ghost companies.

These firms used the same email address.

BharatPe has leveled accusations against Grover and his family, alleging that they caused losses to the company amounting to approximately Rs 81.3 crore.

These losses were allegedly incurred through illegitimate payments made to fictitious human-resource consultants, inflated and unwarranted payments through pass-through vendors connected to the accused, fraudulent transactions involving input-tax credit, penalties paid to Goods and Services Tax (GST) authorities, unlawful payments to travel agencies, falsified invoices, and the destruction of evidence.
