In a turn few foresaw at the start of the year, Shedeur Sanders’ name was finally called during Day 3 of the 2025 NFL Draft. Once touted as a potential early-round pick, the former Colorado Buffaloes and Jackson State standout quarterback was selected in the fifth round by the Cleveland Browns—a move that sets the stage for an intriguing quarterback room and a new chapter for the Sanders family.

Shedeur Sanders drafted by Cleveland Browns : A new chapter begins amid surprising fall

Despite the draft slide, Shedeur Sanders' college résume speaks volumes. Having spent two impactful seasons under the guidance of his father, NFL Hall of Famer and Colorado head coach Deion Sanders, Shedeur showed impressive poise, leadership, and playmaking ability. His performances generated enough buzz to have many analysts projecting him as a potential Day 1 or Day 2 pick. Yet, as draft weekend unfolded, teams seemingly passed him by—raising questions, but not doubts, about his NFL potential.

For Shedeur, joining a quarterback depth chart in Cleveland that features names like Deshaun Watson, Joe Flacco, and Dillon Gabriel could be both a challenge and an opportunity. Learning from veterans like Watson and Flacco could fast-track his adjustment to the pro level while giving him time to refine his mechanics and football IQ.

But it wasn’t just Shedeur who had news to share post-draft. In a heartfelt moment, his mother took to Instagram, sharing, “Mood cause my family moving to Ohio,” confirming that parts of the Sanders family are relocating to Cleveland to support his NFL journey. The close-knit family’s decision to move speaks volumes about their commitment to Shedeur’s success, both on and off the field.

While some critics may focus on his fall to the fifth round, history tells a different story. NFL legends like Tom Brady, who was famously drafted in the sixth round, and undrafted stars like Tony Romo and Kurt Warner, have all proven that success isn’t dictated by draft position. What truly matters is what comes next.

ESPN draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. didn’t hold back in calling out the doubters. “The NFL gets it! They know everything! No, they don't! The guys who have slid have done pretty well... there's a lot of fake news out there surrounding the Sanders family with Shedeur and Deion,” he stated, backing the young quarterback’s talent and potential to thrive despite the slide.

For Sanders, the journey is just beginning. And if history is any guide, draft day disappointment can often be the fuel that drives a future star to greatness.
