Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor - Looking back at one of the nastiest brawls in the UFC

UFC fans had a major throwback moment when the Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor public feud completed seven years on April 4, 2025. A detailed insight would clarify the fact that the entire feud started with the word ‘chicken’ and resulted in a high-octane bout between McGregor and Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 . Despite the intense trash talk by the Notorious, Nurmagomedov got the final laugh inside the Octagon.
Fans of MMA discuss the respective team dynamics of Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor 7 years after the public feudInterpretations are subjective, and the case of Conor vs. Nurmagomedov is the best example of this notion. While the word ‘chicken’ is just another word that would be referred to as a childish insult in America, such is not the case in Russia.

“It might not sound very serious to you guys, but just so you know, ‘chicken’ is one of the biggest insults you can give a man in Russia. In fact, if you call someone a chicken in Russia, that is a person that gets raped in prison – in male prison.” Artem Lobov spoke at the Ariel Helwani Show, “That’s what a chicken is in Russia. And Khabib knows that, and everybody knows that. It is a very, very, severe insult.”

Nurmagomedov hurled at McGregor with the word several times in 2016, following which McGregor’s then-teammate and close friend Lobov decided to speak up and launched a war of words at The Eagle. While both fighters had their objectives for UFC 223, the hotel confrontation between the two led up to the infamous Khabib vs. McGregor bout at UFC 229.

Nurmagomedov confronted Lobov regarding the words addressed to the Eagle by the latter. While Khabib accused Lobov of using the word “p**sy”, the latter denied any such act, and it eventually resulted in Khabib’s team landing multiple slaps on Lobov.

An enraged McGregor, days later during UFC 223 press day, was seen throwing chairs and metal barricades at a bus carrying Nurmagomedov and his team. Few fighters, including Michael Chiesa, were injured by the broken glass pieces and risked their pair-up in the upcoming bout. While the fighters managed to get down from the bus chasing the Notorious, they were unsuccessful in catching up to him. This set up the most anticipated title fight of the UFC. Even though Khabib submitted McGregor in the fourth round, he instigated an all-out brawl between both teams, which resulted in his $2 million purse being withheld by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

On the 7th anniversary of the incident, fans of both fighters reflected on the infamous brawl and drew a comparison of the consistent team loyalty of Khabib and McGregor. Lobov, who was once McGregor’s closest friend, has filed a $6 million lawsuit against the latter revolving around the inception of the Proper Number Twelve Irish Whiskey Brand.

“7 years later, Khabib (Nurmagomedov) still has the same people around him. And Artem Lobov is suing Conor McGregor in court for $6 million dollars”
