One of Tamil Nadu's most well-known festivals is Puthandu. This day is celebrated with great zeal and intensity by the Tamil people. As the Tamil New Year , this day is observed on the first day of the Tamil month, Chitterai. The Tamil calendar states that if Sankranti falls after sunrise but before sunset, the day is known as New Year's Day; if it falls after sunset, the following day is known as Puthandu. Puthandu 2025: Significance
For Tamils, Puthandu holds immense significance. This day is celebrated with the same fervor as the New Year. It is believed that Lord Indra arrived to earth on this auspicious day to bring about tranquility and peace. Additionally, it is said that Lord Brahma initiated the creation of the universe. As a result, this day has significance of its own. People spend this day with immense delight and happiness in order to attain happiness, prosperity and good fortune for the upcoming year as the day is believed to be the most fortunate, day and some people even start new businesses.
According to astrology, the Sun's position determines this day and it changes its zodiac sign from Pisces to Aries. The Sun would be situated halfway between the northern and southern hemispheres of the world. That represents the harmony between humans and the natural world.

The elders give money and presents to each child of the family for their good fortune. Devotees go to the temple to ask God for blessings. They offer their Kul Devi and Kul Devta prayers. Some Tamilian families also carry out sacred rites like "Tharpanam" to ensure the souls of their departed ancestors are saved. In this way, they give thanks to God and enjoy their day with many blessings.

1. Women get up early and clean the house.
2. To welcome prosperity, women begin decorating their homes with Kolam and take herbal baths, particularly with turmeric.
3. People greet one another and welcome family members to their homes while dressed traditionally.
4. They bring auspicious fruits, sweets, flowers, and other stuff home.
5. Special bhog prasad, or Pongal (a special rice meal), is offered to God in a ceremonial that includes devotional hymns.
6. Following Puja rites, families share a special dessert called "Mango Pachadi," which is a concoction of jaggery, sour raw mango, tamarind, neem leaves, and red chilies.
7. On this auspicious day, people cook a variety of vegetarian dishes and solely eat vegetarian food.
8. As a fundamental aspect of the tradition, the oldest family member reads the Panchangam as a part of the celebration.
