Shubman Gill becomes second-fastest Indian to 5000 T20 runs

NEW DELHI: Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill added another feather to his cap on Sunday, becoming the second-fastest Indian to reach 5000 T20 runs during a high-octane IPL 2025 match against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Gill achieved the milestone in 154 innings, placing him behind only KL Rahul , who reached the mark in 143 innings.

Gill’s milestone came amidst a crucial 100-run partnership with fellow opener Sai Sudharsan while chasing a target of 200.

It was the pair’s seventh 100+ stand in IPL, taking them to third on the all-time list behind only Virat Kohli-AB de Villiers (10) and Kohli-Chris Gayle (9). Their fluent partnership not only kept Gujarat in command but also took them closer to a playoff berth for the 2022 champions.

The match was a record-laden affair. Earlier in the day, KL Rahul produced a batting masterclass, smashing an unbeaten 112 off 65 balls — the first century by a right-handed batter this season and the highest individual score ever against Gujarat Titans, surpassing Suryakumar Yadav’s 103* in 2023.

Rahul also became the fastest Indian to 8000 T20 runs, achieving the feat in 224 innings — ahead of Virat Kohli’s 243.



All four previous centurions this IPL season — Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Priyansh Arya, and Vaibhav Suryavanshi — are left-handers, making Rahul’s ton a standout effort. However, his heroics might fall short with Gujarat’s openers making the 200-run target look increasingly modest.
