European gyms vs Indian gyms: A Ukrainian woman ranks

For fitness fanatics, missing a day in the gym is a nightmare. From your regular gym to the one you go to while you travel, are they all similar? Not really. The equipment, the cost, and the culture there could be visible differences. A Ukrainian woman who has trained at both European and Indian gyms has now shared her ‘honest’ review.

Viktoriia Chakraborty, a Ukrainian woman who currently lives in India, has shared her personal experience hitting the gym in both European countries and India.

“I’ve been training in Indian gyms since 2017 and honestly, there are things European gyms should learn from India,” the woman said in a video shared on Instagram. The video has gone viral on social media. Take a look.

Cost image
When it comes to the cost of memberships, India is affordable compared to Europe, according to the woman. “In India, fitness is accessible. You don’t need to spend €50–100 a month like in Europe. Even mid-range gyms here give full facilities at a fraction of the price. That keeps more people consistent,” she said.

Culture imageThe woman also expressed that she enjoys the community vibe in India, as the people are social. According to the woman, one may feel lonely in European gyms. “Indian gyms feel social. People talk, share tips, spot each other, and actually know the trainer’s name. It’s less lonely compared to the “headphones-on, no-eye-contact” culture in Europe,” she said.

Workout at your own pace and time imageThe woman also appreciated the flexible hours and plans available in Indian gyms. “Many Indian gyms open super early or stay late. Plus, day passes, monthly, quarterly there’s flexibility for students, travelers, and professionals. In Europe, most gyms are strict with yearly contracts,” she said.

Trainers imageGetting the professional help of a trainer is crucial in the fitness journey. But will it cost you an arm and a leg? Not in India, according to the woman. She revealed that in India, one “doesn’t always need to pay extra just to get advice.” “Trainers often guide you casually, correct your form, and check in on your progress,” she said. The woman stated that to get personal attention, one always needs to buy expensive packages in Europe. “In Europe, personal attention is usually locked behind expensive PT packages,” she said.
