Following its euthanization, netizens took to social media to pay tribute to the famous squirrel. One post read, "It is heartbreaking and so wrong! Where are all the animal organizations in outrage?”

One comment said, "I feel so sorry for this guy. The government came and took his squirrel “Peanut”, which he’s owned for 7 years, and another pet raccoon and euthanized them both, for no apparent reason. “Peanut” was the mascot for his animal non-profit and had a social media following of over a million people. When the government shows you and tells you who they are—believe them."

Making it a political issue, netizens even blamed the democrats. A X user stated, "Make sure everyone you know hears the story of Peanut the squirrel and Fred the raccoon. The Democrats went too far this time. They raided this man because a hater reported them for having these pets. New York stole the animals and KILLED them. This is the Democrat Party ."

In a video shared by Lango, he stated that the New York officials got a search warrant from the judge for the squirrel and raccoon in his care and they took them away and killed them.
