Shillong: Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma on Thursday laid the foundation stone for the Indigenous Cultural Centre of Seng Khasi Kmie at Mawkhar here.
The centre will be constructed at a cost of Rs 15 crore, and is being envisioned as a living gateway to the Khasi heritage, where traditions would be displayed, actively practiced, passed on and celebrated.
"For 125 years, Seng Khasi has stood as the guardian and guiding force of the Khasi identity — upholding the faith, traditions, and cultural essence of our people. It remains a beacon of resilience and pride for the Khasi community. This is not just a building, but the foundation of a cultural movement — a place where our identity, rituals, beliefs, and way of life are preserved for generations to come. For over a century, many important rituals have been performed in open spaces without proper infrastructure. We are correcting that with a commitment that reflects the cultural significance of our people," the CM said.
