Salem: A youth on Wednesday morning stabbed a college girl in full public view at the old bus stand in Salem city for rejecting his love and attempted to take his own life by slitting his throat. Both the youth and the girl are undergoing treatment at the Salem Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital, where their condition is said to be stable.

The Salem city police said Mohanapriyan, 19, of Veerapandi, befriended S Surya, 21, a college student from Minnampalli, on Instagram six months ago. While Surya was a third year BSc student of Govt Arts and Science College in Vincent area, Mohanapriyan was looking for a job after completing ITI.

"Their friendship blossomed through Instagram and Mohanapriyan expressed his deep affection for Surya. When they finally met in person a week ago, she indicated that she did not share the same feelings for him. While this created rift in their friendship, Surya's family fixed her marriage with her maternal uncle's son. They were planning to solemnize the wedding in the second week of July after the completion of Surya's studies," a police officer said.

When Mohanapriyan came to know about this development, he confronted Surya at the old bus stand in Salem city on Wednesday, as she was waiting for a bus to college. "They entered into a verbal spat and in a fit of rage Mohanapriyan stabbed Surya with a knife. He then attempted suicide by slitting his throat," said assistant police commissioner Harishankari.

When alerted, the Salem city police rushed the duo to the Salem Govt Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital. Police have registered a case against Mohanapriyan, who is likely to be arrested once he is discharged from hospital.
