Coimbatore: A day after a girl student committed suicide on the campus of Hindustan Hospital at Nava India in the city, her family members on Wednesday urged the city police to conduct a proper investigation into the incident.
The family members of the deceased girl, G Anupriya, 18, of Tiruvannamalai district, met city police commissioner A Saravana Sundar on the day, seeking action against a section of teaching faculty at Hindustan Health and Science Institute who conducted an inquiry with the girl in the name of stealing Rs1,500 from an internee. They said they suspected foul play in her death.
According to police, Anupriya, a first-year allied health science course student, ended her life by jumping off the fourth floor of the hospital on Tuesday evening. "The college management initiated an inquiry after Rs1,500 belonging to a student of another private college doing internship went missing from the hostel. Anupriya and a few other students were questioned over the missing cash. Following the inquiry, the girl took her extreme step."
Meanwhile, more than 100 students of the college gathered in front of the department of forensic medicine at the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital, demanding police take stringent action against the college management.
The family members and students refused to accept the body after the postmortem. The institution handed over a cheque of Rs5 lakh to the family. Later, the family accepted the body.
The institution's principal, Manimozhi, told the media that the inquiry was conducted with all students as per practice. "|Anupriya was not named a suspect in the incident. However, an explanation was sought from the student, and her parents were also informed."
The Peelamedu police have registered a case of unnatural death, and further investigation is on.
