IPL 2024: Sunil Narine Powers KKR To 98-Run Victory Over LSG, Dethrone Rajasthan Royals At Table Summit

After a commanding 98-run victory over LSG on Sunday, May 5 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, KKR has reclaimed the top spot in the IPL 2024 points table. The resounding win has put the Knights in a strong position to secure a playoff berth. Notably, their impressive net run rate of +1.098, the highest among all participating teams in the tournament, serves as a significant advantage for them.

On the flip side, LSG finds themselves in a precarious situation as they've dropped to fifth place in the standings, trailing behind Pat Cummins’ SRH. With only three matches remaining in the league stage, KL Rahul’s squad has little margin for error if they hope to secure a playoff berth. In their match against the Super Giants, KKR displayed a clinical batting display followed by precise bowling, leaving their opponents with minimal breathing room.

The standout performer with the bat was Sunil Narine, who blazed his way to 81 runs off just 39 balls, smashing 6 fours and 7 sixes. His partnership of 61 runs with Phil Salt in 4.2 overs set a solid foundation for the Knights. Following Salt's brisk innings of 32, Narine combined forces with the young Angkrish Raghuvanshi to add 79 runs for the second wicket.

The decision to promote Andre Russell didn't go as planned, as he fell victim to Naveen-ul-Haq's dismissal. Naveen stood out as the top-performing bowler for LSG, concluding with impressive figures of 3 wickets for 49 runs in his 4 overs. Contributions from Shreyas Iyer and Ramandeep Singh in the form of cameos, scoring 23 and 25 runs respectively, aided the Knights in reaching a total of 235 for 6 on the scoreboard.

The Super Giants faced significant struggles during their run-chase, ultimately being bowled out for 137 runs in 16.1 overs. Despite KL Rahul's 25 off 21 balls, his dismissal by Harshit Rana halted his momentum. Marcus Stoinis posed a threat to the Knights with aggressive batting, notching up 36 runs off 21 balls before falling prey to Andre Russell's bowling.

Stoinis' onslaught ensured LSG secured their second-best powerplay performance in IPL 2024, amassing 55 runs. However, after his departure, the Super Giants failed to regain control of the match. Although Nicholas Pooran, Ayush Badoni, and Ashton Turner managed to reach double-digit scores, they couldn't capitalize before being dismissed.

KKR's Sunil Narine showcased brilliance both with the bat and ball. The crafty off-break bowler crucially removed Badoni, finishing with figures of 4 overs, 22 runs, and 1 wicket. Rana, returning after a one-match suspension, made an impact with 3 wickets for 24 runs.

Varun Chakravarthy added to LSG's woes with figures of 3 overs, 30 runs, and 3 wickets. With the exception of Vaibhav Arora, all KKR bowlers secured at least one dismissal. At present, KKR undeniably stands as the team to beat, showcasing dominant performances throughout the tournament.
