An incredibly tiny island in the middle of a beautiful lake is one of the best in Europe. Isola San Giulio is in Lake d'Orta in Piedmont, measuring just 275 metres long and 140 metres wide.

Legend has it that the island was once a bare rock inhabited by snakes and terrible monsters, until the day in 390 AD when San Giulio landed, crossing the lake on his cloak and guided in the storm by his staff. It is described as "a small island located in Italy, on a lake with tranquil waters, inviting contemplation and a connection with spirituality and history" by Postal website. One of the island's main sights is the Basilica di San Giulio. Built in the 12th century, it is full of medieval frescoes and sculptures and is a popular stop for pilgrims.

Close by is the Mater Ecclesiae Benedictine Abbey, which is now a Benedictine monastery housing nuns who have devoted their lives to prayer, study, restoring old church vestments, making communion wafers and the famous "pane di San Giulio".

The other buildings on the Isola San Giulio, now private residences, were once priests' lodgings; one of the oldest is Villa Tallone, where classical music concerts are held every year.

There is also the 19th-century Bishop's Palace, a restaurant with a terrace overlooking the lake, and a souvenir shop to explore on the tiny island.

Isola San Giulio also has the Street of Silence and Meditation, which circles the island. It is perfect for a peaceful stroll, offering beautiful views of the lake and inscriptions that encourage introspection and reflection.

On the other side of the water is the small town of Orta San Giulio, on the eastern shore of the lake. It is situated on a rock peninsula that juts into the lake in a lizard-like shape.

Old houses and palaces cluster by the lake's edge and on the lower slopes of the Sacro Monte mountain. The main square, called the sitting-room of Orta, is surrounded by porticos and cafes and opens onto the lake.

Those wishing to visit can fly into Milan. From there, you can get a train or bus to Lake d'Orta and a ferry to Isola San Giulio. There are lots of places to stay on and near the lake, including hotels and holiday lets.
