Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney get big cash injection after promotion

Wrexham's promotion to the Championship has not only thrilled fans but also promises a substantial monetary gain for celebrity duo Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds. The owners are poised to receive an impressive £8million boost from television revenue, following the club's promotion achieved with one match remaining.

The Red Dragons' form was undeniable as they prolonged their undefeated streak to nine games following a decisive 3-0 victory against Charlton Athletic on Saturday. Their promotion chances could have been extended to the season's climax by Wycombe Wanderers, yet their own aspirations were dashed after suffering a 1-0 loss at Leyton Orient.

In a conversation with talkSPORT prior to confirmation of promotion, Kieran Maguire, a foremost football finance specialist, expounded on the fiscal implications of climbing the leagues. "If we start with the money coming in, which is spectacular, Wrexham made three times as much money as any other club in League Two, more than any other club in League One, and they would actually be in the top half of the Championship," he explained.

Maguire continued: "Therefore, they're not that far behind the big hitters of the Championship, the likes of Stoke and Norwich and so on. It's an incredible achievement in terms of bringing in the money and it's their ability to become an international brand which has really driven this.

"I was teaching in Charlotte in Carolina last year, and the only football shirts I saw were those of Wrexham, which is an amazing achievement, and that's on the back of the documentary. If they get promoted this year, that adds another £8million of TV money because they'll be in the Championship TV deal. That would put them fairly close to all of the clubs, with the exception of those who are in receipt of parachute payments, in the Championship."

Following yet another stellar season, Wrexham have secured promotion for the third year running. They dominated the National League in the 2022-23 campaign and took the second spot just behind Stockport in League Two the following year.

Now competing in the third tier, Wrexham has outdone their previous 88-point record and look to finish even stronger, though they won't catch up to the top-tier leaders Birmingham City this time around.

The team's summer signings, including Ollie Rathbone, have significantly contributed to their successful run. Rathbone, formerly trained at Manchester United's academy, scored a crucial goal in the recent victory over Blackpool and kick-started the win against Charlton.

Shortly after Rathbone's impactful strike at the 15-minute mark, Wrexham's January signee Sam Smith fortified their lead. Smith, who arrived from Reading for a hefty sum, notched another goal later, underscoring his valuable addition to the squad.

All three promotions were accomplished under the management of Phil Parkinson, and co-owner Reynolds praised the manager following the most recent success. "You can look at so many beating hearts at this club and it all starts with Phil," he declared.
