Rangers line up three options after Steven Gerrard snub as Graham Potter emerges

Rangers have been compelled to shift their focus to alternative managerial prospects after Steven Gerrard withdrew from the contest to become the new boss. The ex-Ibrox manager had promising discussions with club executives in London over the weekend about a sensational comeback to Glasgow.

However, Gerrard decided that the timing was not right to step into Russell Martin's shoes, and the 45-year-old is now no longer in contention. Rangers' top brass were notified that the Liverpool legend was stepping back from the process and they are now engaging with other potential candidates.

German coach Danny Rohl has emerged as the new favourite after making a strong impression on senior figures at Ibrox during initial talks, according to the Daily Record.

Former Chelsea and West Ham manager Graham Potter and ex-Wolves boss Gary O'Neil have also been approached.

But Rohl is leading the pack for the job.

The 36-year-old has previously served as assistant manager at Bayern Munich, Southampton, and the German national team before a two-year tenure as Hillsborough boss.

He departed the crisis-ridden club this summer and is seeking a return to management.

Potter is also on Rangers' radar following his brief spell at West Ham, which ended in September after just nine months in charge.

The former Swansea and Brighton head coach is being considered by Gers, but he's unlikely to accept the role at Ibrox.

Former Bournemouth and Wolves boss O'Neil has been unemployed since being dismissed from Molineux last December.

Rangers are considering other options after sacking Martin last weekend, with the Ibrox side currently sitting eighth in the Scottish Premiership table.

When Gerrard agreed to engage in discussions with the club in recent days, eager Rangers supporters anticipated his return for a thrilling second stint at the helm.

Having guided them to their 55th title four years ago, the England legend departed for Aston Villa but is eager to get back into management after leaving Saudi club Al-Ettifaq.

However, despite productive conversations with chairman Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe, this will not be happening.

It's understood that Gerrard appreciates the support he's received from Rangers fans to replace Martin and hasn't dismissed the possibility of managing the club again in the future.

But for now, the task falls to the club's top brass to secure a new manager ahead of Saturday's Premiership match at home against Dundee United.

Rohl is a front-runner, but it's believed that others will be approached within the next 48 hours.
