Protesters are gathering in a Nottinghamshire town as fury mounts following posts by MP Lee Anderson. The Reform UK MP claimed a man charged with rape in Sutton in Ashfield, in his constituency, is an asylum seeker.
While the claims that the offender was an asylum seeker have not been verified, they have sparked protesters in the town centre on Friday (July 25). A counter protest by Stand Up To Racism is also planned to take place.
Pictures from the protest show crowds gathering and marching through the town centre. Some of the protesters are carrying Saint George's Cross and Union Jack flags while others are chanting derogatory comments about Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.
Nottinghamshire Police confirmed that a man was arrested after a woman was reportedly raped at Sutton Lawn. He appeared at Nottingham Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, July 22 and was remanded in custody until August 19, as reported by Nottinghamshire Live.
