Mirra Andreeva did not realise she had beaten Emma Navarro on Centre Court and innocently attempted to continue playing despite having already wrapped up the win. The 18-year-old was in blistering form as she knocked out the No.10 seed 6-2, 6-3.
Andreeva was love-40 ahead in the ninth game of the second set when she won the final point as Navarro returned a dropshop into the net.
The Russian then walked back to the baseline to continue playing while Navarro stared confused on the opposite side of the net.
Andreeva's box rose to their feet in celebration, indicating to their star that she had progressed to the quarter-finals. And she chuckled to herself while jogging to the net to shake hands with Navarro.
Explaining the strange conclusion, the No. 7 seed said: "I kept telling myself I'm facing break point and tried to tell myself I'm not the one who is up, I'm the one who is down. I was so focused that in the end I completely forgot the score. I'm happy I did it because otherwise I would be three times more nervous on the match point."
Andreeva was delighted to be playing in front of 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer, who took his place in the Royal Box.
"Honestly it's something crazy. I was super nervous. I really tried my best not to look over there in the Royal Box because I knew I would completely lose my focus," the teenager added.
"I saw Roger and Mirka. It means a lot that you came and watched my match. It's been one of my dreams to see you in real life [crowd cheers]. When I saw you I got really nervous but I'm super happy I managed to keep focused. I just want to say [Federer's wife] you look really pretty, I really like your outfit."
Andreeva's coach is 1994 Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez, who is playing the invitational doubles.
And Andreeva is planning to embarrass her mentor. She explained: "I can get my revenge, finally. I'm already thinking about the poster I will make and I hope some people will help me do this. I will come to the court with a huge poster and support my coach because that's my time to get back at her."
