regular scheduled broadcast was interrupted to share some "breaking news" about US president as he made a huge mistake on-air. Trump was in a press conference after declaring he would ban Harvard University from enrolling foreign students - which has now been blocked by a judge in the States.
The Trump administration claimed the college is allowing "anti-American, pro-terrorist agitators" to assault Jewish students on campus, as well as "coordinating with the Chinese Communist Party". But in a new broadcast live from the White House, Trump was quizzed about his true intentions. One journalist asked him: "Why do you not want the best and brightest from around the world to come to Harvard?"
With a live breaking strap underneath, which read: "Trump: Tariffs aren't hurting, they're helping", Trump responded: "I do, but a lot of the people need remedial rath."
The slip of the tongue led him to quickly correct himself: "Math. Did you see that? Where these students can't add two and two, and they go to Harvard. They want remedial math, and they're gonna teach remedial math at Harvard. Wait a minute. So why would they get in? Why would somebody that can't add or has very basic skills, how do they get into Harvard? Why are they there?"
He added: "And then you see those same people picketing and screaming at the United States and screaming that they're anti-Semitic or they're something, we don't want troublemakers here. But how do people that can't- When Harvard comes out with a statement that they're going to teach some of their students remedial math, that's basic math, that's not the deal."
While it is true Harvard has been offering a remedial math class for freshmen, it is nothing to do with international students specifically - just those on campus lacking "foundational skills" in geometry and algebra. The university has blamed it on the Covid-19 pandemic which interrupted schooling, but administrators also scrapped standardised testing requirements - meaning applicants didn't show SAT or ACT scores on their applications.
Viewers were quick to respond to the bizarre rant, with one tweeting: "Trump's brain is mush." Another added: "What is he even talking about?" While a third viewer echoed: "Even if some of what he said is true, what gives him the right to threaten such a prestigious institution? Is it because he - or perhaps his son - couldn't get in? Sounds a lot like envy to me."
