'Epic battle royale' series hailed Netflix's 'next big hit'

Netflix fans are already losing their minds over an upcoming live-action series set in the late 19th century.

The Japanese Netflix original, which is also based on the novel of the same name written by Shogo Imamura, takes place during the Meiji period.

The synopsis reads: "During the Meiji era, 292 fighters came together at Tenry-ji Temple in Kyoto after sunset, drawn by the chance to win a grand prize of ¥100 billion.

"The challenge was clear: take each other's wooden tags and make it all the way to Tokyo. The winner would get the prize. One of the warriors, Shujiro Saga, joined the dangerous contest with a personal mission: to help his sick wife and child."

The series in question is Last Samurai Standing, and Netflix has just released a trailer.

Junichi Okada stars as the aforementioned Shujiro Saga, along with Yumia Fujisaki as Futaba Katsuki.

Netflix shared the trailer on X, formerly Twitter, saying: "An epic battle royale. 292 samurais. One point per life. Last Samurai Standing premieres November 13."

The trailer shows Shujiro taking care of his sick family, reluctantly saying he would be willing to raise his sword again to make some money.

He promises he will return, as he is told of the savage rules of the game.

Full of epic fight scenes, the trailer has already caught the attention of fans of the genre.

Taking to the comments, Temilade simply said: "I am definitely watching this."

The series also stars Junichi Okada, who is the show's producer and action choreographer.

The six-episode series featured nearly 300 actors, each requiring their own costume.
