Goodbye summer, hello spider season. From late August to October, UK households will see more spiders scurrying across their homes. Male spiders will be looking for a mate this time of year which is a nightmare for anyone scared of the eight-legged beasts.
The last scenario anyone wants is to discover spiders or dust mites in their bed, potentially leading to a nasty shock when uncovering the sheets. Dust mites can trigger symptoms like skin rashes and allergic reactions, and due to their minuscule size, they're notoriously difficult to eliminate.
Fortunately, a cleaning guru has laid out a straightforward method to oust both pests using just two ingredients.
TikTok lifestyle influencer Chantel Mila, with an impressive following of over 1.6 million, says one way to deter spiders and dust mites from your bedroom - and particularly your bed - by concocting a basic spray made of two things.
In her latest video, she shares: "This mix is my go-to to leave your room bug-free and smelling amazing."
What's more, the solution calls for just two common items likely already in your kitchen - white vinegar and essential oil.
How to keep spiders and dust mites at bay from your bedBegin by taking a spray bottle and filling it with one cup of water. Next, mix in half a cup of white vinegar, and add a few drops of either lavender or peppermint essential oil.

Essential oils are not just for relaxation or sleep; they're also incredibly useful for keeping household pests at bay.
Chantel recommends giving your homemade repellent a good shake before spraying it over your bed or any areas where you fear spiders might lurk, saying: "This powerful mix can be used on your mattress, bedhead and bedsides to repel spiders and dust."
Spiders have an aversion to the potent acidic scent of white vinegar, but when diluted with water, it can be sprayed around your sleeping area without leaving an unpleasant smell.
The essential oils, particularly peppermint, are effective against a variety of pests including rats, mice, and flies, which all find the odour off-putting.
In addition to these methods, cinnamon is another spider deterrent. Sprinkling this aromatic spice along windowsills and doorways acts as a natural barrier, discouraging spiders from entering your home in search of warmth and mating opportunities.
