Kamala Harris Outspends Trump by Millions—But Can She Secure Victory?

Send Push

Kamala Harris' election campaign spent almost three times as much as her opponent, Donald Trump, in August as they gear up for the upcoming November 5 presidential election. Financial disclosures filed on Friday revealed Harris' significant financial edge as the race enters its final phase.

Harris, who launched her campaign in July after President Joe Biden decided not to seek re-election and endorsed her, reported $174 million in campaign spending last month to the Federal Election Commission. On the other hand, former President Trump reported spending $61 million during the same period.

Harris' financial advantage allows her to saturate media outlets with television advertisements as Election Day approaches. However, this advantage may not guarantee her victory, as polls show both candidates running neck-and-neck in key battleground states. In the 2016 election, Trump famously defeated Hillary Clinton despite being outspent by the Democratic campaign.

Both Harris and Trump stated that a significant portion of their August spending went toward advertisements, with smaller amounts allocated for rallies, travel, and staff salaries. Harris' campaign also donated $75,000 to the Detroit Unity Fund, a non-profit dedicated to boosting Black voter turnout in Michigan, a crucial swing state.

Harris experienced a surge in donations following her entry into the race, ending August with $235 million, slightly more than she had at the start of the month. Trump's campaign, however, saw a dip, closing August with $135 million, about $17 million less than its beginning balance.

Both campaigns had previously disclosed their fundraising totals for August, which included the accounts of their respective political parties. Harris reported raising $190 million for the month, while Trump brought in $45 million.
