The Indian Consulate in Toronto has canceled several of its upcoming consular camps after Canadian security authorities failed to provide necessary security protection. This decision was shared through a post on the social media platform X.
The Consulate's message clarified that due to security agencies' inability to ensure basic protection for community camp organizers, some scheduled consular camps would no longer take place.
This move follows a recent incident of violence orchestrated by anti-India extremists during a consular camp co-organized by the Indian Consulate outside the Hindi Sabha Temple in Brampton, near Toronto. The disruption prompted strong condemnation from India, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing his concern about the incident.
In response to the violence in Brampton, the Indian High Commission issued a statement, highlighting the regularity of consular camps that assist local citizens with vital services like life certificates. The statement emphasized that Canadian authorities were requested well in advance to provide sufficient security for these routine events.
The High Commission also expressed disappointment, stating it was "deeply disappointing" that such disruptions occurred despite full cooperation from local organizers. The safety of applicants, including Indian nationals attending the camps, remained a significant concern.
Earlier, similar attempts to disrupt consular camps were reported in Vancouver and Surrey on November 2 and 3, further highlighting the ongoing security challenges.
Due to the ongoing threats to Indian diplomats and officials, the Indian High Commission had previously warned that future consular camps would depend on adequate security measures provided by local authorities.
The growing diplomatic rift between India and Canada has included Canada’s violation of international norms, including the Vienna Convention, and increased surveillance of Indian diplomats. In response, India’s Ministry of External Affairs has formally protested these actions.
