Asda shopper gets £52 food shop for just £12.98 using 'hidden' labels

An eagle-eyed Asda shopper bagged himself an impressive £40 off his grocery haul by utilising 'Asda Rewards' tags found during his weekly shopping trip.

The dedicated customer, when at his local Sheffield shop, opted to try out the brand's app which nudges customers towards certain products in exchange for cashback that morphs into vouchers for later use – a tactic that can seemingly turn into quite the lucrative pastime.

Certain items dish out as much as 10 per cent back into one's Asda Rewards account, not to mention the additional bonuses on 'Super Stars' goods, fuelling this thrifty buyer's ability to amass a hefty discount voucher. The bargain hunter explained: "After I downloaded the app I noticed the 'Star Products' labels on various shelves. Sometimes they were hidden, for example an 'out of stock' label might be covering up a product label if it hadn't been changed by a member of staff, reports the Express.

"Other times, I'd be stood weighing up whether to buy one product or the other when I would check the app and realise that one of them was offering credit back on the purchase. For instance I was trying to buy some cola cans and they had £2.50 back on Coke Zero, but weren't offering anything on Pepsi despite being a similar price per can. So I ditched the Pepsi and bought just under £30 worth of Coke Zero, which instantly gave me £7.50 in my wallet."

A thrifty shopper has taken to social media to share the secret behind his impressive Asda grocery haul, where he managed to snag £52 worth of items for a mere £12.98. The money-saving buff went into the details of using Asda's Rewards Top Picks scheme, which rewards shoppers with instant cash back on certain products.

He advised: "Of course it wouldn't be worth it if the product you switch to is more expensive, but where the price was the same for the same size, I followed the 'rewards' labels on the shelves. In the space of about two or three big shops I had £40 to spend in store."

By cleverly converting this accumulated credit into a voucher via the Asda app, he dramatically slashed the price at checkout, continuing: "I'm already back up to £5.50 on the app. It's more generous than other supermarkets, and I get another 1% cashback by paying on a Chase card."

However, the savvy buyer did offer a word of caution, as sometimes these tempting deals may not truly be the best value when compared to other outlets or if there's been a recent hike in prices. Asda's Rewards Scheme promotes itself by saying: "Explore 100's of Star Products and start earning today. Purchase any of our Star Products and you'll receive an instant Cashpot boost equivalent to 10% of the product's price. Super Stars give you even more!".

Consumers are reminded that while savings can rack up quickly, they should always stay sharp to make sure they're getting a genuine bargain.
