The people of Mandi proudly claim that Banaras (Kashi) has only 80 temples, whereas Mandi has 81 temples. Mandi is also a popular commercial center in Himachal Pradesh. The city is located on the banks of the Beas River and also displays the masterpieces of old palaces and colonial architecture.

The city of Mandi is located 145 kilometers (90 miles) north of the state capital, Shimla. It is important from the tourism point of view and the Navratri fair held here is famous. This fair held every year on the occasion of Navratri in Mandi has its own identity in the world. It was once the capital of Mandi princely state. Mandi city was founded by Ajbar Sen in 1527. Mandi princely state existed till 1948. Later the main city was shifted from Old Mandi to New Mandi.
