Fruits and Vegetables You Shouldn't Store Together

Send Push

Storing fruits and vegetables properly is essential to maintain their freshness and nutritional value. However, many people make the mistake of storing them together, which can cause certain produce to spoil faster. Here are some fruits and vegetables that should never be stored together:

1. Potatoes and Onions

Storing potatoes and onions together is a common mistake. Onions emit ethylene gas, which causes potatoes to sprout and spoil quickly. Additionally, the moisture from potatoes can cause onions to rot. It’s best to store them in separate, well-ventilated areas.

2. Tomatoes and Cucumbers

Tomatoes and cucumbers should not be stored together, especially in the refrigerator. Tomatoes emit ethylene gas, which accelerates the ripening and rotting of cucumbers. This can cause cucumbers to spoil quickly, so it’s best to keep them apart.

3. Grapes and Green Leafy Vegetables

Grapes are known to release ethylene gas, which can cause green leafy vegetables, such as spinach and lettuce, to wilt much faster. To keep your greens fresh longer, store grapes and leafy vegetables in separate drawers or areas.

4. Broccoli and Tomatoes

Broccoli is very sensitive to ethylene gas and will turn yellow more quickly if stored with tomatoes. Tomatoes release this gas, which can cause broccoli to lose its color and nutritional value. It's best to store them separately to preserve the freshness and health benefits of both.
