New Delhi, Sep 12 (IANS) Former G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant expressed confidence that trade ties between India and the United States will soon return to normalcy, as negotiations between the two countries have resumed following recent tariff disputes
Talks have begun and everything will be sorted out quickly. I am sure India and USA’s relationship in the trade sector will be very good,” Kant told IANS.
Tensions had flared after US President Donald Trump announced the imposition of 50 per cent tariffs on Indian exports. While an initial 25 per cent duty took effect on August 7, an additional levy was enforced on August 27.
Trump later confirmed that negotiations were back on track. “I am pleased to announce that India and the United States of America are continuing negotiations to address the Trade Barriers between our two Nations,” he posted on Truth Social.
Calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “very good friend,” Trump said he looks forward to speaking with him “in the upcoming weeks.”
PM Modi responded on X, reaffirming the strength of the bilateral relationship and expressing optimism over the outcome of the talks. “India and the US are close friends and natural partners. I am confident that our trade negotiations will pave the way for unlocking the limitless potential of the India-US partnership. Our teams are working to conclude these discussions at the earliest. I am also looking forward to speaking with President Trump. We will work together to secure a brighter, more prosperous future for both our people,” Modi wrote.
