New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) filed a supplementary chargesheet against Tahawwur Rana, a key accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, in the NIA Special Court at Delhi’s Patiala House. The development comes as a Delhi court on Wednesday extended Rana’s judicial custody till August 13.
The supplementary chargesheet includes Rana’s arrest memo, seizure documents, and other case-related materials. The NIA had earlier filed the first chargesheet against Rana in 2012, but his recent extradition from the United States and new revelations have added momentum to the ongoing probe.
Rana Extradited From US To India
Rana, who was extradited from the US to India on April 10, is now facing trial for his alleged role in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, which claimed 166 lives, including several foreign nationals. His extradition followed the US Supreme Court’s rejection of his plea against the decision on April 4.
On July 4, a Delhi court had previously extended his custody till July 9. Upon the expiry of that period, Rana was produced before Special Judge Chander Jit Singh via video conferencing. During the proceedings, Rana’s counsel raised concerns about his deteriorating health, prompting the court to direct Tihar Jail authorities to file a detailed status report by August 9.
'In Mumbai During 26/11 Attacks, Trusted Pakistani Army Agent': Tahawwur Rana Makes Explosive RevelationsRana Confesses Of Being Pakistani Agent During Mumbai Terror Attacks
Earlier this week, Rana reportedly made major disclosures to the Mumbai Crime Branch, claiming that he acted as a trusted agent of the Pakistan Army and was present in Mumbai during the 2008 attacks. According to reports, he is suspected of having provided handwritten instructions, coordinates, and maps to David Coleman Headley, who conducted reconnaissance of key targets including the Taj Hotel and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus.
The NIA has also indicated plans to take Rana to Mumbai and other cities as part of a reconstruction exercise aimed at retracing the planning and logistical routes taken by the conspirators in the lead-up to the attack.
The 26/11 attacks remain one of the deadliest terror strikes in India’s history, involving ten heavily armed terrorists from Pakistan who launched coordinated assaults across Mumbai. Rana’s role, as per Indian agencies, is critical in exposing the broader international support network that aided the attackers.
