Mumbai: The residents of Govandi have demanded a judicial and departmental investigation into an alleged systematic corruption at Shivaji Nagar police station after its senior inspector, Bapurao Madhukar Deshmukh, was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for accepting a bribe on Tuesday.

About The Case

In a major crackdown on corruption within the police force, Mumbai ACB arrested Sr.PI Bapurao Madhukar Deshmukh (57), head of the Shivaji Nagar police station, on Tuesday night. He was caught red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from a school trustee at the police station. This amount was reportedly part of a bigger bribe amount of Rs 2.5 lakh that he had allegedly demanded for providing police protection and assistance in a legal matter.

Concerned Citizens of Govandi, a citizens’ action group, has demanded a thorough investigation into the Shivaji Nagar police station’s working during Deshmukh’s tenure. Residents alleged that several offences were lodged falsely or selectively, influenced by bribes or personal gain. Innocent citizens were allegedly harassed, falsely implicated, and denied fair trial rights, leading to serious violations of the right to equality and the right to life, alleged the citizens.

On Wednesday, the residents wrote to the Mumbai Police Commissioner, Maharashtra Home Department, Director General of ACB, National Human Rights Commission, Registrar (Judicial) of the Hon’ble Bombay High Court, and the Lokayukta highlighting multiple demands. They demanded a thorough forensic audit of Deshmukh’s call detail records (CDRs), WhatsApp logs, financial assets, and all communication with subordinate officers. They also sought a complete legal review of all FIRs registered during his tenure and discharge proceedings for victims of wrongful prosecution.

The citizens emphasised the urgent need for CCTV surveillance with audio-video recording at every operational point in the police station, weekly surprise audits by senior IPS officials, annual integrity audits for officers in high-sensitivity areas, and public disclosure of investigation findings under the RTI Act. They have also demanded that the corrupt proceeds should be recovered and transferred to the Maharashtra Police Welfare and Infrastructure Development Fund.

Shaikh Faiyaz Alam of the citizens’ group said, “This incident has sent shockwaves across the local community. This incident has exposed what citizens believe to be a deep-rooted system of corruption, extortion, and institutional failure within the local policing mechanism. This case highlights not just individual misconduct but a structural collapse of public trust in the law enforcement system. We demand urgent, transparent, and accountable action to restore faith in democratic policing.”
