Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Bangladesh's Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus in Thailand on Friday, marking the first high-level talks between the two nations since the controversial flight of Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from Dhaka last year.
The meeting comes on the sidelines of the sixth Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Summit, which was attended by the Bangladesh government's advisor.
India has expressed concerns about the deteriorating law and order situation in Bangladesh under the current interim government, which has faced significant criticism for its handling of extremist elements and the exoneration of many Islamists since the fall of the Awami League government led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024.
Earlier on Thursday, the official X handle of the Chief Advisor of the Government of Bangladesh posted screen grabs of both leaders sitting side by side at the dinner table, where the Thai PM welcomed the BIMSTEC leaders.
Local media in Bangladesh quoted the Chief Advisor's Deputy Press Secretary, Abul Kalam Azad, as saying that both leaders "met each other" during the official dinner. The interim government of Bangladesh has been keen on holding the first-ever bilateral talks between the two leaders during the summit.
On Friday, Bangladesh will officially take over the BIMSTEC chairmanship.
Last week, PM Modi wrote a letter to Yunus on the occasion of Bangladesh's National Day, underscoring the importance of mutual sensitivity while referring to the Bangladesh Liberation War as a "shared history."
He emphasized a commitment to advancing the partnership between India and Bangladesh, driven by shared aspirations for peace, stability, and prosperity, while respecting each other's interests and concerns.
