The latest episode of the ultra-glamorous ‘ Fabulous Lives Of Bollywood Wives’ just got more emotional. Former actress Neelam Kothari who is one of the participants of the show, opened up on her tumultuous first marriage. For the unversed, Kothari tied the knot to UK-based entrepreneur Rishi Sethia in 2000. However, their marriage didn’t last long and they called it quits soon. Later she married fellow actor Sameer Soni.

Reflecting on her first marriage, the ‘Love 86’ actress revealed she was pressurised by her in-laws to change her name, dietary habits, etc. Although she tried to appease them for a while, she found the experience emotionally exhausting.

“I was told to wear Indian clothes and give up non-veg, and alcohol. I was fine with everything. I was also asked to change my name, and I did that, too. A lot of people do that. But, changing my identity? That is something I was not okay with. I reached a point where I questioned myself, ‘How am I allowing this?’ There were several times when I used to be in a supermarket or out on lunch, and someone would come up to me and ask, ‘Are you Neelam the actress?’ And I had to say, ‘No, I am not Neelam,” she recalled.

Neelam was a well-known name in the 1990s, working alongside stars like Govinda. However, her abrupt exit from the limelight left many fans heartbroken. After her divorce from Rishi, Neelam returned to India and later married Sameer Soni. She has also been working toward making a return to films.

In a candid moment, Neelam shared that her daughter Ahana once brought up her divorce, catching her completely off guard. "I came home from work, and Ahana was with her friends. Normally, they’re full of energy, running around and shouting, but this time, it was unusually quiet," Neelam recalled.

"Ahana approached me and said, ‘Mumma, you never told me you were divorced.’ I was stunned, completely speechless. I asked her, ‘How did you find out?’ She replied, ‘You’re a celebrity, so my friends and I googled you. The first thing we saw was that you were divorced and had been married before.’” Neelam expressed her shock and regret, explaining that she never wanted her daughter to discover this information in such a manner.
