Chennai and nearby districts, including Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpet, are likely to receive significant rainfall, estimated between 6 cm and 12 cm over isolated areas within a 24-hour period, up to November 15. The rainfall is expected to intensify due to a low-pressure area forming over the southwest Bay of Bengal, which is forecasted to move towards Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka in the next few days.
"For the next 48 hours, the city and the suburbs may receive moderate to heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning over some areas. Skies may be partly cloudy. Maximum temperature is likely to be around 32°C-33°C and minimum temperature is likely to be around 25°C," an IMD bulletin stated.
IMD officials have indicated that heavy rainfall, which is expected to begin in the coastal areas stretching from Tiruvallur to Ramanathapuram on November 12, may gradually expand to neighbouring regions by November 13.
Since October 1, Chennai has recorded 43 cm of rainfall, representing a 1% surplus, while Tamil Nadu has seen 26 cm, also around a 1% excess.
