Why Liverpool has failed to fill two places on substitutes bench vs RB Leipzig

Send Push

boss has named just 10 substitutes for the Reds clash against RB Leipzig on Wednesday evening, .

The Reds face off against the Bundesliga side at the Red Bull Arena, looking to make it three wins from three in Europe's elite club competition. Previously, Slot's side beat AC Milan at San Siro 3-1 in the opening round of Champions League action before dispatching Bologna at Anfield 2-0.

However, they will be without their full compliment of substitutes on Wednesday night due to the injuries the Reds currently have, alongside the fact their U19's played in the UEFA Youth League earlier in the day.

Liverpool's youngsters took on their RB Leipzig counterparts, losing 3-1. Goals from Jamie Schuldes, Noah Weissbach and Friedrich Heyer saw Leipzig's U19's past Liverpool, whose only goal of the game came through Kieran Yusuf Morrison.

And due to them playing earlier in the day, Slot is unable to round out his bench with two of the Reds youth team players. UEFA rules allow for a team to name 12 substitutes on the bench for a match day, but Liverpool has named just 10 for their senior clash against Leipzig.

The Reds also have a number of injuries to deal with. Diogo Jota, Federico Chiesa, Conor Bradley, Harvey Elliot and Alisson are all missing from the Liverpool squad to face Leipzig.

The former of that quintet had to be substituted against Chelsea at the weekend, coming off around the half hour mark for Darwin Nunez. Chiesa's absence has been put down to him having missed pre-season training, with Slot recently stating prior to the Champions League clash.

He said: "With Federico it's a bit more simple, although it is difficult, it is a bit more simple to explain. He missed pre-season, I said this many times, and going to a league that is a higher intensity than Serie A, we just faced two Italian teams so I can say this now."

Both Bradley and Elliot did not travel to Germany, and neither did goalkeeper Alisson, who picked up a hamstring injury in the Reds final game prior to the October international break. Slot added: "Conor Bradley didn't make the trip, Harvey Elliott didn't make it, Federico Chiesa didn't and Alisson didn't make the trip either, so that means we have a few issues at the moment."

Liverpool.com says: "Of course, it is not the end of the world the Reds didn't use their full allotment of places on the subs bench against Leipzig. However, what is perhaps more worrying is the fact Liverpool are currently without five players who would allow them to be able to rotate their starting XI, especially given their upcoming gauntlet of fixtures. After Leipzig, they are set to take on Arsenal on Sunday, before having to face Brighton twice, Bayer Leverkusen and then Aston Villa prior to the November international break."
