What Mikel Arteta did after latest refereeing controversy leaves Arsenal fuming

Send Push

Arsenal took advantage of Manchester City’s dropped points at Newcastle United with a hard-fought victory over Leicester City. However, it required a very late goal, well into added time from Leandro Trossard to win it.

Gabriel Martinelli broke the deadlock before then finding an assist for Trossard before the half-time whistle. However, the Foxes came back with two goals in the second half, but saw their hearts broken with two late goals.

With the game being a 3 o'clock kick-off, the match was under the usual British broadcasting embargo meaning only those outside the UK could gain the benefit of live pictures. Thankfully, football.london were in attendance to catch everything that the cameras that were in the ground missed.

Neto getting into it

Arsenal's summer signing Neto is still yet to make his debut for the club with there being some pre-match feeling it could have come against Leicester, but David Raya was passed fit to start the match. He spoke when he arrived on deadline day of his appreciation for the club and even having a fandom for the Gunners too.

While not having made an impact on the field yet, he was certainly buying into the fan feels before the game. After completing some drills with the forwards, taking part in some shooting practice, as the team walked in Neto was clapping the fans all the way along the touchline - he might however be waiting until the FA Cup in January to get his chance.

He knows what it means

Gabriel Martinelli gave the Gunners the lead in the first half, slotting in a calm finish from Jurrien Timber’s cross. The Brazilian has been under pressure to deliver for Arsenal after a period with very few goals or assists barring his setup for Riccardo Calafiori last weekend.

Declan Rice knows this and was asked by Martin Keown after the 0-0 draw with Atalanta about his teammate following a late miss in Italy. "One thing with Gabi is that he's quiet but he's so tenacious," Rice explained.

"You see him in training, he's always trying to get himself into the right areas, he wants it, he would've wanted to do better with the chance he’s had tonight." It was clear from how Rice celebrated with his left-wing colleague, going over and grabbing him by the shoulders for a congratulatory shake.

Refereeing inconsistency angers Arteta

Into the second half and the inevitable happened, a player who was not wearing red delayed the restart and nothing was given. Gabriel Martinelli tried to take a quick throw-in, with the ball handed to him by Mikel Arteta, and Justin got in the way, stopping the throw from being taken.

The referee, Sam Barrott did nothing and Arteta was fuming. He stormed toward the fourth official, gesticulating, pointing at his chest and spinning his hands clearly frustrated of the punishments that the Gunners have suffered for what he believed to be an identical action.
