A teenage mum died in a freak accident that involved a large bird, believed to be a turkey, as she was on her way to pick up her daughter.

Mum Abbigail 'Grace' Callaham, 17, and her boyfriend Thomas Kennedy had been on their way to a day-care centre following an early finish from Belton-Honea Path High School in South Carolina, on Tuesday when a large bird, believed to be a turkey sudden flew out from woodland and smashed into the windshield of their vehicle.

The sudden impact led to Kennedy losing control of the vehicle and eventually hitting a tree, according to the Anderson County Coroner. Callaham did not wear a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was pinned to her seat by the tree. She was pronounced dead shortly afterward, having suffered several severe injuries. Fox News Carolina reported Kennedy was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Network WYFF 4 reported that he was able to speak with emergency services when they arrived at the site of the crash. Coroner Greg shore said in a news release: "We are all heartbroken over the circumstances." He added that Callaham's dad was "grief stricken" after learning his daughter had died. It emerged Callaham's 12-year-old sister was also at the scene.

The Anderson School District Two said in a September 24 Facebook post: "t is with great sadness that we inform our ASD2 family of the death of 11th grade student Abbigail "Grace" Callaham. Grace was involved in a vehicle accident this morning after leaving BHP. We will have extra counselors at BHP to provide grief support to students and staff. Please keep Grace's family in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate through this difficult time.

"Additionally, we ask that you keep 12th grade student Thomas Kennedy and his family in your thoughts and prayers as he was also involved in the accident and is currently in critical condition. We will host our annual See You at the Pole tomorrow at 7:30am at BHP, where we will lift up prayers for both of these students and their families."
