'Keir Starmer needs to remind UK of the difference a Labour government can make'

This week’s Labour conference in ­Liverpool should have been a moment for the party to celebrate returning to power after 14 years in the wilderness.

But the mood has been dampened by the row over ministerial freebies and the removal of winter fuel payments from pensioners.

Keir Starmer’s address tomorrow needs to dispel the gloom by reminding the country of the difference a Labour government can make.

We should not forget that in its first 80 days Labour has ended the junior doctors’ strike, begun taking the railways into public hands, launched Great British Energy, ended no-fault evictions and set up a national wealth fund.

There will be further announcements this week, with Rachel Reeves today setting out plans to clamp down on tax avoidance which costs the Treasury billions of pounds. Tomorrow, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper will reveal new measures to tackle shoplifting.

The past few days have been difficult for Labour but this government is determined to transform lives and build a better Britain.

Gifts of life

Thirty years ago the NHS set up the Organ Donation Register to encourage people to donate their organs.

Since then more than 100,000 donor ­recipients have been given the most precious gift of all ­– the gift of life.

Thanks to the Mirror’s campaign, the law was changed so people now opt out of the register rather than opt in, helping to increase the number of transplants.

But each year there are still hundreds of people who die while on the waiting list.

Generations of lives have been saved thanks to people’s kindness but even more could be saved if more donors come forward.
