Dion Dublin, the host of Homes Under the Hammer, was eager to showcase a particular property on Thursday's episode, but his tour revealed an unexpected twist.

The TV presenter ventured to the "leafy suburban" area of Woodstock in Nottingham, a hotspot for house hunters, where he showcased a detached two-bedroom bungalow. The property, with a guide price of £200,000 at auction, seemed like a bargain on the show.

At first glance, the home appeared to be a steal, but a closer inspection revealed significant challenges, including huge holes in the roof that would need addressing. While Dion appreciated the bungalows spaciousness, he acknowledged the extensive work required to bring it up to scratch, describing it as a "starting from page one" project, yet he could still see "the potential", reports .

In his exploration of the eerie and abandoned building, Dion encountered something quite out of the ordinary for a bungalow: a peculiar wooden staircase.

As he walked down the hallway, considering the perfect place for a ground-floor toilet, he stumbled upon the staircase. Puzzled, he remarked on camera: "And we've got... ? " Clearly perplexed, he blurted out: "Ok, why have we got stairs?"

As the property expert mused over an enigmatic feature, he remarked: "Stairs leading to... I don't know where the stairs are leading to because I thought this was a bungalow?" Not one to dwell, he swiftly turned his attention to the rest of the house, commenting: "Right, we've got a kitchen there which is er, quite small and a bathroom that is even smaller."

Despite the dismal state of the interior, the housing guru looked for silver linings, noting the presence of "original features" worth preserving and "big tall ceilings". Though as his gaze met the ceiling, he couldn't ignore the gaping holes.

On discussing the original features, he admitted to viewers: "You know you would try to keep as much as you possibly can but so far, I'm not sure what you could keep," then his expression brightened as he discovered a sizable room.

He enthused about the spacious find: "Well not tight and small in here at all, lots of space in this room and ceiling height is good, even though there's not much ceiling because there's massive holes everywhere. This is a definite start on page one type project but I do like the layout."

His journey up the mysterious staircase ultimately took him by surprise. He expressed in astonishment: "I wasn't expecting all of this space," and with elation added: "I think this could be a four bed house, you've got three on the ground floor at the front of the property and you could put a bedroom up here no problem at all."

Andy, a seasoned property developer, bagged the bungalow for £250,500, leaving Dion feeling "jealous" due to it having "so much potential." After a complete overhaul of the property, Andy found himself in a pickle.

He shared with the hosts: "I'm not quite sure if it's a family home or a party home, leaving me in a bit of a dilemma about what to do with it. Do I sell it? Do I rent it? Or do I move in?"

Eventually, Andy overshot his renovation budget of £100,00 by £15,000. Having grown "attached to the property", Andy decided he wanted to keep it in his portfolio, but was undecided on whether to move in or rent it out.

Homes Under the Hammer airs weekdays on BBC One from 11am and can be streamed via iPlayer.
