Erik ten Hag told he has 'verbal diarrhoea' as Man Utd's 'lap for losers' slammed

Former Premier League champion Chris Sutton insisted Erik ten Hag had 'verbal diarrhoea' in his post-match interview following Manchester United's dismal defeat to Tottenham.

United fell to their third loss of the Premier League season at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon as they were smashed by Spurs. Brennan Johnson scored after just two minutes and 35 seconds to put the visitors ahead.

Bruno Fernandes was then sent off for serious foul play before Dejan Kulusevski doubled his side's lead soon after the break. Dominic Solanke wrapped up the scoring with 13 minutes remaining when he poked home from close range, with United left humiliated.

Despite Spurs being utterly dominant even when it was 11v11, Ten Hag pinned the blame for his side's defeat on Fernandes' sending off. Though he conceded his side started badly, the Dutchman made his thoughts clear on the decision to show his skipper a red card.

"A very bad start from us. The red card changed everything as it was still 1-0 but we are down to 10 and it makes it difficult. I don't think it is a red card, but the decision is made," Ten Hag told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"There is always a new day and we will learn from it - my players are strong characters and we will bounce back. We have to learn from this and quickly."

But Ten Hag's argument was slammed by Sutton, who delivered a brutal response to the United boss. Sutton also took aim at the Red Devils players giving their fans a lap of honour at the full-time whistle.

He told 5 Live: "Ten Hag has verbal diarrhoea. I don't know what game he was watching. The lap at the end is a lap for losers. Qarabag gave Tottenham a better game on Thursday night than Manchester United today. That's the type of performance which gets the manager the sack."

Legendary United skipper Gary Neville also believes time is ticking down quickly on Ten Hag's reign. Neville warned the Dutchman he must put things right quickly or find himself searching for a new job.

"The pressure is going to get ramped up this week – it is going to be brutal. It has been a bad day for Ten Hag, really bad. It's one of the worst performances I have seen under Ten Hag - and that is saying something. It is really bad," he told Sky Sports.

"The big story was that first half – it was not from nowhere – but they have chosen to put in their very worst performance. It was a disgusting performance in effort and quality and a lot of questions to answer from that group in the next week.

"I've been here enough times over the past 10 to 12 years so know that a result like this, something has to be sorted now. It'll just snowball if it doesn't get sorted. It's been a shocking, sobering day."
