In a press conference in Barcelona this afternoon, Wiegman addressed the upcoming Euros tournament and her squad, which is set to be named in the coming days.
The manager said: “We are pretty close. Of course, you want to go to the game tomorrow and make the final decisions, but we’re pretty close.”
Having a fit squad for the Euros was the priority, she explained, but Wiegman asserted that the Nations League game tomorrow also mattered. She said: "We want to win and every prize that you can win you want to win.”
The manager added: “We’re also preparing for the Euros, so if a player has a little injury that would be a risk for the Euros, then I wouldn’t play her.
"At the same time, I think our squad is strong enough that we could have a good performance tomorrow against a top, top team, but I think we’re a good team too, and we’re going to do everything to win that game.”
Wiegman was also asked about, who is currently out with a hamstring injury. She said: “We’re trying to get her fit, she’s trying to get fit, with all the support from Chelsea and all the support from us.”
James could make it into the squad for the Euros, Wiegman explained, but first she will need to “tick some boxes”. “We think she can make a difference in the Euros. But she needs to be healthy, she needs to recover. I’m pretty positive that’s going to work,” she said.
Other injured players include Chelsea captain Millie Bright, who announced she would be taking an “extended period of recovery” and Tottenham’s Ella Morris.
Manchester City’s Lauren Hemp and Alex Greenwood recently returned to the Lionesses' squad after they both underwent knee surgery.
After several months out, the players made a comeback on Friday - perfect timing for Wiegman’s Euros squad announcement.
Last week, goalkeeper Mary Earps announced her retirement from international football in a shock move. The 32-year-old had made 53 senior appearances for England and played a key role in the Lionesses winning the Euros in 2022. However, she had recently been replaced as starting goalkeeper by 24-year-old Hannah Hampton.
Wiegman said she was disappointed to hear the news, adding: "I had hoped that Mary would play an important role within the squad this summer."
