Jaipur: The state govt is hopeful that the healthcare infrastructure will expand with the addition of two new medical colleges in the academic session 2025-26. Medical education is making efforts to get approval from the National Medical Council (NMC).

The western region will benefit if a new medical college in Jaisalmer gets NMC approval, while another college is scheduled to begin operations in Tonk during the same academic year. These additions have elevated the total count of government-operated medical colleges to 31, bolstering the state's medical education capacity. "We are getting two new medical colleges which will start functioning from the academic session 2025-26," Ambrish Kumar, Secretary, Medical Education, told TOI. He said that last year (2024-25), the state started the academic session in five medical colleges.

In 2024-25, the medical education department secured 500 additional MBBS seats after the Union govt granted permission for five new medical colleges in Nagaur, Sawai Madhopur, Baran, Banswara, and Jhunjhunu.

Tonk's Principal Medical Officer (PMO), Dr Hanuman Prasad Bairwa, said, "The work for building the hospital and medical college has been completed. We have hostels for students along with other facilities fulfilling the norms of NMC. The medical college of Tonk is prepared for starting the medical college from the academic session 2025-26."

Jaisalmer's Principal Medical Officer, Chandan Singh, said, "The building of the new hospital with a capacity of 340 beds has been completed." He said that preparations have been completed for the medical college as per the NMC norms.
